In 2011, a 1999 Mazda Miata MX-5 set a record of 165.296 mph in the Bonneville Salt Flats G/GT class. This iconic car, which also competed in the SCCA Spec Miata class, has now been generously donated by the esteemed car owner and Piston Foundation Founders Club member, Harvey Siegel of Long Valley, New Jersey. The Miata has been listed on the Bring a Trailer digital auction platform, with the auction running from October 23 to October 30 at bringatrailer.com. All proceeds, including the buyer’s fee, will be dedicated to The Piston Foundation scholarship program.

The Piston Foundation, led by President Jeff Mason, previously auctioned a 1973 Datsun 240Z and a 1960 Willys Wagon, raising an impressive total of $154,240 and providing scholarships for 27 aspiring technicians. The upcoming sale of the Miata is expected to generate more scholarships for the year 2023.

The Mazda Miata, aptly named the 2160, underwent significant modifications, resulting in its ability to reach high speeds on the Salt Flats. Its powerful engine, producing over 290 horsepower, was later replaced with a 1.8-liter powerplant for the Spec Miata competition. The car’s remarkable history and unique modifications make it a valuable piece of land speed history, according to Mason.

The car’s notable provenance is further underscored by its successful test at Lime Rock Park in Connecticut, conducted by NASCAR Xfinity Series racer Parker Kligerman, who praised the Miata’s nimbleness and lightness, highlighting its popularity in the racing community.

The winning bidder of the auction will not only acquire the Miata but also receive the Bonneville engine, the aerodynamic wheel covers, and other crucial components used during the record-setting run. Notably, the Bonneville engine has undergone thorough maintenance, including the installation of fresh bearings, rings, and gaskets in preparation for the sale.

Additionally, the Miata will be showcased at MiataCon at Lime Rock Park on October 27-28, coinciding with the culmination of the auction. The Piston Foundation, renowned for its efforts in supporting future automotive restoration technicians, continues to accept donations of classic, historic, and vintage cars, providing collectors with a unique opportunity to contribute to the advancement of the automotive community.
