Maserati’s storied racing heritage takes center stage with the introduction of the MC20 Icona and MC20 Leggenda, two Special Series vehicles crafted to commemorate the 20th anniversary of the Trident’s triumphant return to competitive racing in 2004, after a 37-year hiatus, with the legendary MC12.
The MC12, initially launched as a road version, swiftly became a benchmark in GT championships, influencing the creation of the Maserati MC20 super sports car. The MC20, a symbol of Maserati’s innovative spirit, was unveiled in 2020, featuring the groundbreaking V6 Nettuno engine, marking the start of a new era for the brand.
Limited to just 20 units each, the MC20 Icona and MC20 Leggenda boast exclusive liveries and unique features inspired by their illustrious predecessor. The MC20 Icona’s livery pays homage to the MC12 Stradale, echoing the colors of the 2004 model and celebrating the legacy of the Maserati Trofeo Light, the first car to draw inspiration from the Maserati Birdcage Type 61 of the late 1950s and early 1960s.
Adorned in Bianco Audace Matte and Blu Stradale, the MC20 Icona showcases meticulous personalization through the Fuoriserie Personalisation Program. Highlights include the Maserati Fuoriserie logo in Bianco Audace on the lower side panels near the rear wheels and the Italian flag logo on the door beneath the MC20 lettering. Silver hubcaps with contrasting blue Trident logos, blue-painted brake calipers, auto-dimming mirrors, and a carbon fiber engine cover further enhance its aesthetic.
The MC20 Leggenda, on the other hand, carries a livery of Nero Essenza and Digital Mint Matte, inspired by the award-winning MC12 GT1 of the Vitaphone Racing team. This livery reflects the car’s record of three victories and two runner-up finishes in the 24 Hours of Spa. The Fuoriserie features include Nero Lucido trident wheels with Nero Opaco and Digital Mint hubcaps, yellow Trident logos on the grille, doors, and C-pillar, and black brake calipers.
Both special series feature racing interiors with lightweight 4-way monocoque racing seats, Trident embroidery on the headrests, and model-specific “Icona” or “Leggenda” badges. The powerful Nettuno engine cover also bears the inscriptions “ICONA. UNA DI 20” or “LEGGENDA. UNA DI 20.”
Inside, the vehicles are equipped with the sophisticated Sonus faber sound system, carbon fiber interior accents, electronic limited-slip differential (E-LSD), suspension lifter, blind spot and rear cross path systems, and customized mats for both the front and the boot.
The MC20 Icona and MC20 Leggenda celebrate not only Maserati’s 20-year milestone but also the golden era of the MC12 GT1’s dominance. Between 2004 and 2010, the MC12 GT1 secured 27 victories in the FIA GT Championships, including three wins at the 24 Hours of Spa, six Teams’ championships with Vitaphone Racing, five Drivers’ championships (including two FIA GT1 World Championships), and two Constructors’ championships for Maserati.
The 2004 MC12 Stradale, designed by Giorgetto Giugiaro and powered by a Ferrari-derived V12 engine, remains Maserati’s fastest production car, with a top speed of 330 km/h and a 0-100 km/h acceleration in just 3.8 seconds. Only 50 units of this remarkable car were produced.
Today, the legacy of those triumphs and the embodiment of Maserati’s dedication to performance and excellence live on in the MC20 Icona and MC20 Leggenda, symbolizing the passing of the baton to a new generation of racing excellence.
